We have seen many signs advertising Medjool dates.  So I got online to do some research.  It turns out that the largest Medjool date packing and marketing  facility is located in Yuma, AZ.  The Medjool date is the most popular variety and considered the “king of dates.”

While driving in the country we saw some date farms.  The cotton bags are placed around the dates to protect them from insects, birds, dust, and weather.

Harvest begins in September, when the dates are hand picked.

Date farms are a beautiful site when driving through the desert.

We couldn’t resist stopping for pictures.

  1. We first saw the date palms on a trip to Palm Springs in Oct. We couldn’t figure out what all those bags were on the palm trees until we visited a date farm. We felt so silly once we found out.

  2. that is so cool! we would be in heaven down there. we go through a ton of dates. I bet we eat over 2 cups a day. How cool I never knew they grew like that I don’t know what I had pictured but that was interesting.
