The San Diego Zoo is world famous.  We were fortunate enough to spend several days exploring the lush tropical forests, see amazing animals, take trails that included escalator like people movers, and watch several shows.  If you are in the San Diego area, I highly recommend at least one day.  The zoo is quite big and it would be easy to spend two whole days walking and still not see everything.  Wear good walking shoes!

Dave used his telephoto and got a great shot of the tiger chewing on his bone.

There were shows going on through out the zoo.  The Chinese Acrobats were Luie’s favorite.  He loved them so much, that he wanted a picture with them.

The handsome giraffes were just amazing.  We were so bummed that we missed the chance to feed them by hand.  If you are planning a trip, check online first to see feeding times.  How amazing would that be!?

Summer loves plumeria blossoms almost as much as I do.  She always sticks one behind her ear when we are in Hawaii.  So she was pretty excited to find one at the zoo.  She will never pick one off the tree, but if they are on the ground, they are fair game.

This cute little creature is called a red panda, although the sign said that it is not actually part of the panda family.  Still, it was adorable.

This rhino was surprisingly friendly.  When the zoo keeper came close it walked right up to him and got a rub down.  It moved along from shoulder to backside, just like a dog.  And then went back for more.  Who knew how affectionate these giant creatures could be?

This baby hippo played with the big ball above and below the water.  We sat and watched it for over 15 minutes.  He was really “having a ball!”  Summer said that this was her favorite part of the day.

In the evening, there was a parade and performances of all the zoo’s entertainers.  We found out later that the zoo closes earlier in the fall, and we were lucky to get the last of the summer late night fun at the zoo.

I LOVE this photo of the meerkats and it perfectly reflects how Dave and I felt at the end of the day.
