A few weeks ago I was walking back home from Thursday market when a little red dog ran up to me.  I played with her for a few minutes then headed home, and she followed me!  She followed me all the way to our front steps, so I sat outside and pet her for a while.  Later I went back outside to go to Luie’s school and she followed me there too!   Luie of course LOVED meeting the little dog.  But, on the way home she wandered off.  I ended up seeing her around town several other times!

Yesterday, a neighbor lady knocked on our door.  As soon as the door opened the dog ran inside and jumped up on my legs!  The lady said that she had found this stray dog and the local animal shelters were full.  So she arranged to bring her to Germany where she had a better chance of finding a family.   In the meantime, she was going to keep the dog, but the dog kept pulling and wanting to go to our house.  So she asked if we knew the dog.  We explained that we had spent some time with the dog.  Seeing how much the dog liked us she asked us to watch her for a few days till she goes to Germany.   Of course we said yes!  So, she gave us a collar, leash, food, and her number.

She spent the night in my room last night.  She kept trying SO hard to get on my bed!  I felt so bad taking her off so many times, but I couldn’t let her get into a bad habit.  She ended up falling asleep all curled up on a towel.  Every once in a while I would wake up to see her head on my bed making sure I was still there.  🙂  I take her for walks every hour or so and she never needs the leash.  She always stays close and has pretty good street sense.   She LOVES getting tons of attention!

Last night when Luie was being put to bed she kept going back and forth between rooms because she had to keep an eye on everyone!  We ended up naming her Saffron because that is what color she is.  🙂  Saffron is SO timid, we were all in the living room one night and she heard a dog barking.  She ran into a corner and was just shaking!   But she calmed down after I let her curl up on my lap and we turned on some white noise so she couldn’t hear the barking.

Whenever someone calls her over she crawls on her belly over to them!   But, as soon as they start petting her she perks right up.

I’ve let her curl up on my lap and fall asleep so many times now whenever someone sits on the ground she is right there!

It’s really nice to have a dog in the house again and I’m sure everyone agrees.  I am going to be trying to teach her some tricks as long as she is here with us and I can’t wait to see how that goes.  Saffron adopted us from the beginning and all of us love having her in the house.   So we ended up having a new friend to spend Christmas with.

  1. Well this indeed deserves a reply. The dog looks exactly like the little 3 legged dog I cared for!!! It is Luie who wanted a dog just like Brandy! You are wonderful to take her for awhile but parting will be hard. Looks like Dave found a friend too! Thanks for this sweet Christmas story. annette

    1. Summer mentioned the same thing. She is such a sweet dog and we have all enjoyed her company. It was great for us to have a special guest for Christmas!

  2. Oh, she’s adopted you. I can see heartbreak ahead when she has to leave you. She must feel like she’s in heaven with you guys!

  3. Saffron is a gorgeous color. Looks like she gets a bath and brush every day! I often think of Kona. Any dog in your family has hit the jackpot!

    1. Saffron has a special bond with Summer, who has taken the responsibility of taking her for walks several times a day. Taking care of her food and water, and grooming her. And Summer is the number one person to Saffron. She follows her everywhere. I know this is going to be tough for Summer and Saffron to say good-bye.

  4. Saffron is adorable and clearly very loved. Any chance you guys would just keep her until you come home or is the RV just too small to make that work? Or for that matter fly her home with you? My mom regularly puts her cats on a plane to their new owners when she sells them to someone across the country. I bet there are ways you could make it work for a longer flight too, though that part does sound kinda tricky. Glad you all found each other!

    1. She is such a great dog that we briefly considered if it was possible. But just cannot make that work while we are traveling. The neighbor has things all arranged for her. And we are glad that we had a few days with her. She has certainly blossomed while she has been here. She wags her tail and seems so happy, no longer slinking around close to the floor.

  5. Carol here…..I Love your new family member. oops I mean pet. It will be hard to say good bye, when the time comes. annnette let me see your blog. i am so pleased to share in your advevtures. We all miss you all. Love Carol. PS. I am a better speller than this note indicates, I!m just not a very good typist.

    1. Carol, you are so funny! This sweet dog is really loving our family as much as we love it. It does not slink close to the floor anymore, is not even half as timid as it was, and just walks around happy and carefree. We miss you all too. I am glad we get to keep in touch!

  6. I just can’t get over how much she looks like John. Cherish her while you have her! As it sounds like you already do. We sure miss Shylee. It’s going to be hard to give her up. Maybe you better keep her. 🙂

    1. It was terribly heart breaking saying good-bye. But she already has a family waiting for her in Germany. So she will be happy!
