Return to the bay of Gibraltar

Written by Dave:  We finally had the weather clear up, and had enough people for the boat to go out again to try to see the dolphins.  We had been checking frequently, but the water was either too rough or there weren’t enough people wanting to go.  Off season is a tough time to try to schedule a trip.  It was a cooler day, but still nice and sunny.  We eagerly set off to board the boat.  We were scheduled for a 12:30 sailing, but when we showed up we found out the other 7 people booked for the trip backed out.  We were told to come back at 3:30.  At 3:30, many people were there, so the trip was on.

A Wet Cold Ride

The guides were determined to find dolphins, so were traveling fast to several different places.  This resulted in a bit of a wet ride.  Being the adventure seekers that we are, we decided to stay up front and face the waves.  This is how Luie started out.

Then we had this passenger ferry cross our path.

The ride was really bumpy, and one time we were all launched from our seats and were airborne for a second.  This really caught the kids, and me by surprise.  I knew we were going to bounce, I just didn’t realize how far we were going to drop.  Here are the results of that bumpy ride.

By this point, Luie decided that he had had enough and wanted to go into the cabin.  I was taking some pictures of Luie in his wet state, and a guy offered to take a picture of both of us.  We were both fairly wet and windblown by this time.

I talked with the guy for a while, and found out he was in Gibraltar working on a programing job.  He said that in addition to being able to work from home, he also travels the world for some jobs on site.  Very nice guy from Poland.  You never know who you will meet when you strike up a conversation with a stranger.

No Dolphins Spotted

After scouring the Bay of Gibraltar and the Straits of Gibraltar, there were no signs of any dolphins to be seen.  That was alright, as we still enjoyed the boat ride again.  The crew was very apologetic, but it is just a tough season to find them.  Oh well, we did get to pet a lot of dolphins at Sea World.  The ride back was smooth, and the wind had dried us off.

Summer and Luie continued to scan the horizon from the front of the boat for any signs of dolphins, but none were to be seen.  We don’t regret making the second trip, as we got to meet new people again, and enjoyed a bit of a roller coaster boat ride.

  1. Ouch! It hurts my back just to hear about bouncing up that high, but I love to be out in the water and feel the waves hit. I enjoyed your adventure just from my chair in the den and it didn’t hurt at all.

    1. I was sitting with my leg crossed under me when it happened, so it was actually my knee that hurt on landing. Still fun, and the kids loved it. They didn’t mind getting wet, Luie only didn’t like it when he got cold.
