Cologne Germany

In German it is spelled Köln.  The Cologne cathedral, called the Dom, is of Gothic construction completed in 1880.  Although the complete building took place over 6 centuries. It is spectacular in both its size and its detail.  It is also one of the most popular attractions for visitors.

The two towers of the cathedral are very recognizable and seem to be symbols of the city.

Inside the cathedral is just as impressive as you would expect.  There are immensely tall ceilings, stunning stained glass windows, columns, statues, and much more.

The fresh pretzels in Germany are amazingly good.  But we had not seen these before.  They are covered with a sweet coating and slivered almonds.

Cologne Germany walk along river

The Rhine River meanders through the city.  There are boats that go up and down the river giving tours.  There is also a nice promenade along the river.  We enjoyed walking along and taking in the sites.

We eventually ended up here, at the Lindt Chocolate Museum.  We would have loved to tour through, but it was closed.  However, when we peeked in the window, we saw a mannequin wearing a chocolate dress.

Buildings over the river Cologne

Aren’t these interesting buildings that seem to hang over the river.  See bene.com for more information on the concept and architectural design.  I believe that the two buildings in the distance are office buildings.  But the one closest looks more like condos.

A sneak preview to a upcoming post:

Flying over Cologne Germany

This photo shows the impressive towers of the Dom cathedral.  They are easily identifiable from the air even on this hazy day.
