Chirimoya, Custard Apple

Winter is Chirimoya season.  Chirimoyas are a tropical fruit native to South America and they are grown in southern Spain.  In English they are called Custard Apples.  We saw boxes of them for sale at roadside fruit stands throughout Andalusia.  They have been described as “flan growing on trees.”

They have a creamy texture.  I thought the taste reminded me of pears and bananas.  Dave and Summer both thought they had a strawberry and kiwi flavor.  Luie wasn’t really sure how to describe it.

We picked out the seeds and ate the fruit raw.  But there are many recipes for them in smoothies, on salads, and in desserts.

    1. I agree, the flavor would probably be too subtle for you to describe. But I bet you would like it none the less.
