The Main St. of Gibraltar is loaded with shopping and cafes.  There is everything from electronics, jewelry, clothes, toys, health food and duty free liquor and tobacco.  The cafes advertise a variety of foods ranging from traditional English, Spanish, Indian, and Italian.  Most of Main St. only allows pedestrian traffic, which makes it much easier to get around.

The above photo is a view of Casements Square at the north end of Main Street.  Gibraltar has walls and gates built around the entire inner city.  First built by the Moors as a fortification from battles, then later strengthened by the Spanish and finally the English.  The Landport Tunnel was originally the only entrance into town.  It is now used as a pedestrian walkway at the nouth end of Casements Square.

Also in Casements Square is a Glass Blowing Exhibition.  We enjoyed walking through and watching as the men used long metal rods and took red hot glass out of the fire and shaped it.

There is lots of good shopping in Gibraltar.  We are often tempted by many things.  But these days we prefer to window shop.  While traveling we just don’t need or have space for too much stuff.  The kids understand and for the most part, they don’t ask for more stuff.  On this day, it was Dave that was very tempted by a beautiful hand made glass dish.  He has always been fascinated by glass blowing.  He knew that a fragile piece of glass would not be easy to travel with, but he still had a difficult time walking away.  So I took a photo of one wall of the shop to give him the memory.

  1. I saw glass blowing in Mexico and have always been fascinated with it. Amazed to see they do it here too. I was curious about the food there, thanks for enlightening me. What do chips look like? French fries? I’ve always wondered what the difference is.
