WARNING*  Spoiler alert for geocachers in Gibraltar.

Geocaching in Gibraltar

Geocaching has been one of our favorite family hobbies for several years.  So when we searched online and found out that we could go geocaching in Gibraltar, we were thrilled.  For those of you who are unfamiliar with geocaching, it is a treasure hunt using GPS.  People hide a small weather proof container that has a log book and sometimes other little trinkets.  Then they post the GPS coordinates online and other geocachers go on the hunt.  Once you find the cache, you can trade a trinket and sign the log book.

Summer quickly found this tiny geocache, located right on a busy street.  The tiny geocaches only contain a piece of paper for people to log that they found it.

Many geocaches in Gibraltar

On the geocaching web site, there are 29 geocaches listed for Gibraltar. We were surprised there were so many in such a small area.  Several times we have searched but not been able to find the cache.  There are several reasons for this.  First, we are still beginners.  Second, we are using a smart phone app which is not going to be as accurate as an actual hand held GPS unit.   Typically our phone can get us within a 30 foot radius.  Using the map and the hint, this can be enough, but there are difficult level micro-caches, where this is just not going to get us close enough.  However, despite several failed attempts we haven’t lost our enthusiasm for this hobby.

This is a larger geocache found by Luie.  He always has a great time looking though the little treasures.  There are many more geocaches for us to find, so we will be doing a lot more treasure hunting.  Some are up on the rock as well.  I noticed several people write in for the top of the rock geocaches, that you have to be extra careful when you find and re-hide the geocache, that the monkeys don’t see you.  They get curious and take the geocache!
